Classroom Peer Mentor Opportunity

I will be teaching Introduction to Sociology in Fall 2017 and am looking for a group of experienced Sociology students to serve as Academic Peer Mentors (AMPs) for my course.
Students who are interested in learning more or in serving as AMPs in the Fall should fill out the following Google form: SOCY 100 AMPs Fall 2017

AMPs will be an essential part of classroom discussions and activities and will serve as mentors for students throughout the semester. Serving as an AMP requires a record of academic excellence in Sociology courses (must have taken SOCY100 in a previous semester), enthusiasm for learning and leading in the classroom, and schedule availability during the course meetings (MWF 9:00-9:50). Students will earn a total of 3 credit hours over the semester.

Role of AMPs in the classroom:
Facilitate small group discussions
Guide students through in-class activities
Serve as academic role models for introductory students

Expectations of AMPs:
Complete required readings for each class meeting
Be present for class meetings (MWF 9-9:50 in Edward St. John building)
Hold office hours for Peer Help Meetings (approximately 2 hours each month)

After applying and agreeing on their duties with me, AMP students will enroll in a one-credit course, TLTC 333: Introduction to Academic Peer Mentoring, which will provide essential training for peer mentorship and leadership skills. This class requires 15 hours of work over the semester, including interactive workshops, online modules, and the creation of a professional portfolio. AMP students will also receive 2 independent study credits through the Sociology Department for their time spent in class and on other duties (reviewing course materials, holding Peer Help Meetings, etc.), which will amount to no more than 6 hours per week.
