Business Operations Intern (Undergraduate Level)

Location: Rosslyn, VA
Position Category: Internship
Posting Date: 02/07/2019
Deadline Date: 03/01/2019
Starting Date: 06/03/2019

Description

About JSI:
For over 40 years, John Snow, Inc. (JSI) has provided high-quality technical and managerial assistance to public health programs worldwide. JSI is deeply committed to improving the health of individuals and communities. We work in partnership with governments, organizations, and host-country experts to improve quality, access and equity of health systems. We collaborate with government agencies, the private sector, and local nonprofit and civil society organizations to achieve change in communities and health systems.

The JSI Center for Health Information, Monitoring and Evaluation (CHIME) is a technical assistance, research, and knowledge group within JSI dedicated to improving the quality of health information and increasing evidence-based decision making in the health sector. CHIME responds to the growing demand for information-driven health services planning and management. The Center provides assistance and resources within JSI and to other organizations to strengthen collection and use of high-quality data to improve health program and system performance. It also works to coordinate JSI resources and experience in research, monitoring, and evaluation (RM&E) to ensure access among RM&E and program staff to essential tools, techniques, and peer support.

About the position:
CHIME is seeking a summer Business Operations intern to provide operational support for its Center-managed projects. The intern will contribute to new business development and project management tasks to prepare students for careers in nonprofit administration and global health.

The intern will engage with staff from various technical areas of expertise across the organization, learn about the opportunities and challenges in working with institutional partners, funders, governments, etc. to promote data-driven decision making, and build skills in strategy, operations, program planning, reporting, and financial management. This will be a paid, 40 hour per week internship.

About you:
You are an aspiring global health professional who is energized by the intractable questions around global health and development and enjoy analyzing and presenting qualitative and quantitative data to shape thinking around policies and programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support document management, including updating operational resources or developing new communication and knowledge management systems and training with members of the team and others in the company.
  • Support organization internal events that reflect current trends and priorities in the business area, as assigned.
  • Contribute to efforts to capture, synthesize, and share JSI’s experiences, capabilities, and lessons learned related to the assigned area of business.
  • Assist members of proposal teams as assigned, performing tasks such as assisting with past performance reports and developing budgets for proposals to learn the fundamentals of new business development.
  • Work as part of a team to provide logistical coordination and administrative support of project activities and events (meetings, trainings, workshops, webinars).
  • Shadow CHIME team members in select tasks to learn the functions of a home office-based project management team.
  • Assist in the preparation of reports, presentations, and technical papers.
  • Summarize (through visual and written materials) learnings from projects for external publication.
  • Provide additional support on other relevant tasks as necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree (rising junior or senior) or recent graduate; a focus on business, public health, public administration, international development, finance, or management strongly preferred.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0.
  • Demonstrated experience in international development or public health.
  • Demonstrated interest and experience in the relevant business operations area preferred.
  • Excellent conceptual, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and willingness to learn.
  • Familiarity with the principles and approaches to monitoring and evaluating global health and development programs is desirable.
  • Experience in manipulation of spreadsheet data.
  • Computer literacy required, specifically MS Office Suite (e.g., MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), and G Suite.
  • Experience working with data visualization platforms (e.g. Excel, Tableau, Power BI), with capacity to contribute to training materials around data visualization programs preferred.
  • Excellent technical writing and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work successfully in a multicultural team environment.
  • Ability to work independently and manage a wide range of activities daily with limited supervision.
  • Language: English proficiency essential; second language skills valuable (French).

Salary commensurate with experience.
