FINANCIAL LITERACY WORKSHOP

Participants who attend this event will learn how to set financial goals and follow through on plans for economic and life achievements. Interactive exercises and thought-provoking questions will stimulate participants to adopt and maintain habits that produce personal and financial success.

Big Data in BSOS Summer Course

Big Data in BSOS: Register for BSOS385/685 This Summer!

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences wants to offer you the opportunity to gain important data science skills and earn elective credit. By building your resume with these valuable skills, you will become more marketable to employers. 

BSOS385/685: Big-Data Analysis on the BSOS HPC Cluster: Advanced Programming for the Social Sciences (Summer I 2018; Meets TuTh 3:30pm-6pm)


Course Description: Social media is a primary source of information on social interaction and personal interests. High-performance computing (HPC) is employed to search for hidden patterns and unknown correlations using advanced machine-learning algorithms available in python and R packages. The main steps of Natural Language Processing and big-data analysis are being worked out, from examining random samples to analyzing large data sets via in-memory Monte-Carlo applications and neural networks. The courses will be offered in a non-standard format with 10 hours of instruction per week and four hours per week of online and/or supervised coursework. Open to all BSOS majors. 2-credits.

Westat has an immediate opening for a research assistant for an important study of education in the United States. The candidate will work with a project team to support the development of training materials for field staff.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Develop training materials for both distance and in-person trainings.
  • Write procedural manuals, checklists, and training presentations.
  • Work closely with team to coordinate tasks and project schedules.
  • Work with IT and project staff on system requirements and documentation.
  • Provide operational support to field staff working with schools and administering assessments.
  • Monitor the productivity and quality of the data collection effort.

Job Requirements:
  • A bachelor’s degree, preferably in the social sciences or education and 1 year of experience in a research or education setting is required.
  • Occasional travel is required.

Strong written and oral communication skills, organizational skills, problem solving skills, and computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Word and Excel), as well as an ability to exercise independent judgment, work collaboratively in teams, and demonstrate attention to detail, are essential. Spanish proficiency is preferred, but not required.

The Petey Greene Program - tutoring incarcerated individuals

The Petey Greene Program, a nonprofit program is recruiting University of Maryland students to train and place in volunteer tutoring positions in jails or prisons.  We are looking for tutors for the Summer and 2018-2019 school year! 

We are looking for undergraduate and graduate student volunteers to tutor GED students once weekly in one of 5 Maryland correctional facilities.

Bio: Steven Swann is the Racial Equity Manager at Bread for the City, a non-profit organization that provides food, clothing, medical care, social services, legal services and community organizing support for people living with very low incomes in Washington, DC. In this role, he focuses on helping the organization play an active role in moving the city and wider society in moving toward racial equity - the condition wherein life outcomes, life chances, and life experiences in our society cannot be predicted by race.

Steven leads Bread for the City's efforts to develop policies, practices, and an internal culture that functions to eliminate racial disparities across the organization. He strives to make community members active participants and decision makers in the work of dismantling racism. In addition, he provides technical support to organizations and coalitions within DC and across the region who share the desire to advance the cause of racial equity.

Steven is the DC team lead for the National Collaborative for Health Equity and the Racial Equity Consultant to the Policy Innovation Lab in the McCourt School of Public Policy at Georgetown University. Steven is a cat dad, a soul/funk DJ, and a perpetually frustrated Baltimore Orioles fan.

The Consortium for Health and Military Performance within the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences, Department of Military Emergency Medicine, is a Defense Center of Excellence. It serves a Joint Service Resource Center focusing on the complete range of disciplines associated with military-unique Human Performance Optimization and Total Force Fitness for maximizing Service Member performance and family readiness. We are involved in research, research translation, education, clinical, and leadership services. 

The CHAMP Internship Program is available to high school-, college/university-, and post-graduate level students interested in developing skill-sets, gaining relevant experience, and advancing in their career paths related to Human Performance Optimization. CHAMP offers 8-week (Summer) and 16-week (Fall) internships. Scholarships may be available through the Uniformed Services University for high school and undergraduate students. Paid internships are available only for graduate students. Academic course credits can be arranged through the applicant’s academic institution. 

Skills learned at CHAMP will be supplemental and/or additional to what students are able to learn in the classroom, such as laboratory research, client interaction, business/educational writing, etc. An internship with CHAMP may provide students with experiential learning, the opportunity to further develop and strengthen their resume and professional capabilities, and make them more competitive for employability.

Set on 450-acres in rural New Hampshire, Wediko draws students from across the country (and the world) with challenging behaviors and diagnoses.
You would have the opportunity to work hands-on with these students, forming therapeutic relationships and developing clinical programming to best serve their needs. You'll log over 750 hours of supervised clinical hours, all while enjoying the fun of a camp-like environment! Activities, swimming, academic time, and various therapeutic outlets keep our students busy and scheduled every minute of the day - and we want you to be part of it!
