Graduating Seniors, M.A. and PhD. candidates:

Things you should know as the Sociology graduation ceremony gets closer:

• Please arrive at Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center by 4:30 pm.  Faculty and Graduates will line up in the Kogod Theater.   This will allow us to go over the details of the ceremony and to make sure we have all the information needed to recognize you during the ceremony.

                                           

• We estimate that the entire ceremony should last no more than 1 ½ hours.  A reception for graduates and their families will be served from 3:00-4:30 pm before the ceremony on the 3^rd floor atrium of the Art/Soc Building.

• Tickets are not required for the Sociology Department’s graduation.  We would like to know the number of students who plan to come to the reception and the approximate number of their guests for planning purposes.

• Members of Alpha Kappa Delta can pick up their honor cords in the Sociology Undergraduate Office.

• Handicapped and limited regular parking is available around Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center.  A shuttle bus will run every ten minutes from the Stamp Student Union Garage.

Things we need to know:

• How many family and friends do you expect to attend the reception?
• Please let us know if you need a sign language interpreter before May 11th.

Residential Rehabilitation Facilitator, Entry Level (Full-Time), Permanent Experienced Hire, 60329

This is a direct service position offered by Way Station, Inc., requiring general knowledge of mental health and specific knowledge and skill in rehabilitation with persons with disabilities. The position requires general and specific knowledge about the club concept, its design, goals and effective operation. Full training is provided to entry-level candidates. This individual is expected, through training and experience, to exercise independent judgment with supervision by the Club Coordinator.

QUALIFICATIONS

                

 Possession of a bachelor's degree (preferred) in related field or professional license (e.g. COTA, RN).

                Positively referenced relevant work, student or volunteer experience.

                Valid driver's license and safe driving record.

                Willingness to use personal vehicle or WSI vehicle in the occasional transport of Way Station members. QUALIFICATIONS

You must have a bachelor’s degree to teach in a private school, but certification is not always necessary

•             Elementary Education and Learning Specialist: teacher certification required

•             Art, Physical Education, and Music: teacher certification strongly preferred

•             Media Specialist/Library: MLS (or comparable degree) required

•             School Counselor: master’s degree in counselor education

•             Administration: master’s degree in administration strongly preferred

•             For most other middle- and high-school teaching positions, a bachelor’s degree with a major in the teaching field (or at least a minor) is essential, but teacher certification is not.

More generally, the best schools want three things: content mastery, enthusiasm for leading extracurricular and athletic programs, and a personality that inspires children to learn.

Research Assistant, Pew Hispanic and Social & Demographic Trends (59609)

COMPENSATION STRUCTURE: Salary

The Research Assistant will support the Pew Research Center’s Pew Hispanic Center and Social & Demographic Trends project. The primary responsibility of the Research Assistant is to tabulate and analyze survey data collected by these two Pew Research projects and data from other sources, such as the American Community Survey and the Current Population Survey. The Research Assistant will work in support of, and under the direction of, senior research staff in developing statistical analysis and the presentation of data for the Center's publications. The data analysis will support research in the Center's primary areas of interest, including demography, sociology, economics, education, political science and survey research.

Primary Responsibilities

Statistical Analysis (55%)

•              Tabulate and analyze data from surveys and other social science databases.

Preparation of reports and presentations (40%)

•              Assist in preparing Center reports and presentations; including preparation of charts and tables, and number checking.

Field outside queries (5%)

•              Respond to media inquiries and inquiries from other outside parties.

Education/Training/Experience

•              B.A. degree is required with a concentration in the social sciences, particularly in demography, sociology, political science or economics.

•              Coursework in statistics or experience with statistical analysis required.

•              Preference will be given to relevant research or on-the-job experience, such as the application of statistical analysis to problems in the social sciences and the use of Excel, Word, statistical software and/or other programs.

•              Prior experience working with survey data or other large micro datasets is desirable.

Knowledge and Skill Requirements

•              Familiarity and experience with research on social and demographic issues is preferred.

Internship at A Wider Circle

A Wider Circle just completed its tenth year of service to the most vulnerable children and adults in our nation’s capital region.  The average family size of those we serve is 3.5 and the average annual income – from all sources – is $11,131.  We serve the neediest of the needy.  We have big goals for being a force in the movement to end poverty.

For the past ten years, A Wider Circle has helped families on the journey out of poverty through the provision of basic need items and free life skills education programming. 

A Wider Circle is a grassroots 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that hires 20-30 unpaid interns each semester to work out of our Center for Community Service in Silver Spring. Interns are truly the lifeblood of our organization. In addition to direct service and education internships, there are business, marketing, research, and strategic planning internships available. Bright Futures: University of Maryland’s Summer Internship Scholarship Fund

Apr. 2, 2012 – The University Career Center & The President’s Promise will once again offer scholarships to students seeking unpaid internships this summer.  With internships increasingly becoming a gateway to full-time employment, this program serves to assist current students to obtain bright futures. Awards average between $250-$1,250 to help offset expenses while students pursue academic and career goals during a summer internship. 

Eligible Candidates: All registered University of Maryland, College Park undergraduate students, who have an internship for summer 2012 and are returning to campus in September 2012, are eligible to apply. Graduating seniors (May 2012) are not eligible. Preference will be given to rising juniors and seniors and to those who have not previously received an award.

In order for your internship to qualify for funding support, it must satisfy the following criteria:

Unpaid on-or-off campus internship

Offered during the summer and completed byAugust 31, 2012

Supervised by a professional in the organization

Youth Ambassador, Summer Internship (59118)

Through the support of Sodexo Foundation, Share Our Strength has created a program to involve college-aged Youth Ambassadors in the fight against childhood hunger by working with one of our state No Kid Hungry partners. 10 Ambassadors will be placed in 3-5 state partner locations: Little Rock, AR; Hartford, CT; Baltimore, MD; and Albuquerque and Las Cruces, NM.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

Youth Ambassadors will concentrate on summer meals outreach, including:

• Planning and execution of summer meals canvass days in targeted neighborhoods of Maryland with a high concentration of summer meals sites

• Outreach to local libraries, churches, community centers, pools, or other locations where eligible individuals and families may be located during the summer months

• Assist Family League of Baltimore City’s mobile meals route and help increase capacity at other existing summer meals sites as needed

• Staffing the Summer Meals Hotline at the Governor’s Office for Children

The ideal candidate will have:

• A great attitude and willingness to work on all kinds of projects

• Some volunteer experience

• Good customer service and interpersonal skills

• Ability to work independently

Daily access to a car and use of personal laptop and mobile phone required.  Bi-lingual (Spanish) candidates preferred. National Sexual Assault Online Hotline Internship, Summer Internship, Internship (Fall or Spring Part-Time)- 44024

Duties:

•Be on time for shifts scheduled using the Online Hotline website

•Complete 40 hours of Crisis Intervention Training

•Follow computer safety best practices learned in the online training

•Work on research and administrative tasks relative to the Online Hotline
