Description

Preventing child deaths by strengthening integrated case management of childhood illness and infant and young child feeding (IYCF) is a shared global priority for child health and nutrition stakeholders. Sub-optimal care and feeding of the sick child puts him or her at higher risk of mortality. Pneumonia, diarrhea and malaria are among the leading global causes of child death. Both vulnerability to and the severity of these illnesses are exacerbated by undernutrition, which is a contributing factor in 45 percent of all under-five deaths (Black et al., 2013). Recent evidence and programmatic experience shows that strengthening nutrition in case management (including for severe acute malnutrition [SAM]) and feeding during childhood illness is crucial to addressing malnutrition and comorbidities, and to achieving SDG targets (Wazy et al., 2014).

It is now the opportune time for country and international actors to converge to identify key barriers and opportunities for implementation of a comprehensive set of nutrition interventions for sick and/or undernourished children, in primary health care settings, including the community settings. With support from USAID-Washington, the maternal and child survival program (MCSP) proposes to convene a workshop to bring together stakeholders and partners from countries to discuss challenges and promising approaches to improve the implementation of a comprehensive set of nutrition interventions for sick and/or undernourished children. The three-day workshop, planned for the Summer of 2018, seeks to translate global and country learning into specific actions to improve nutrition and child health services, and ultimately child health programming, in selected countries and at the global level. International partners have expressed interest in collaborating on shaping the technical content of the workshop and potentially co-sponsoring the workshop and/or international and country participation.

RESPONSIBILITIES

MCSP envisions the intern working closely to support the logistics team’s efforts for the workshop especially with design and procurement of relevant materials. The anticipated overall commitment will be approximately 30% LOE from January/February until July 2018, with more intense and less intense periods of effort over this period (approximately 2-3 days a week). The responsibilities are as follows:

• Support the overall logistical efforts to plan the workshop from start to finish (January 2018-July 2018) in collaboration with the logistics team
• Assist with the selection of the workshop venue regarding and reservations, catering, technology, and any other needs that arise during workshop planning
• Design and order welcome bags, posters/banners, postcards, welcome brochures and USBs
• Create name badges and panel tent cards for the workshop once identified
• Assist with workshop website design and uploading of relevant documents and materials
• Procure any additional materials needed
• Collate key documents for dissemination before and during the workshop
• Work with partnering organizations to ensure correct branding of documents
• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

• Demonstrated interest and experience in event planning, communications and/or marketing
• Preferred studies in global health, public health, and/or international relations
• Strong organization skills and attention to detail
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Proficiency with entire Microsoft Office Suite
