Spring internship with the World Bank


The Energy and Extractives Global Practice is seeking a talented intern to support the development of the ‘WBG Energy & Extractives Open Data and Analytics’ initiative. The selected individual will be expected to coordinate the design and outreach of ENERGYDATA.INFO and will be responsible for supporting extensive engagements and maintaining close working relationships with both WBG teams and external partners. The intern will assist the management in development of new and existing partnerships with public and private sectors including developing materials for events and presentations, support for the preparation of events, internal meetings, and workshops and day-today communication as needed. 
Pursuant to WBG guidelines, the intern will not be compensated financially, and the internship will fulfill credit or internship requirement of the academic program. 

Duties and Specific Tasks 
The intern will work with the work with the Open Data and Analytics team and the specific responsibilities of the selected candidate will include, but not be limited to:
  • Strategies: Assist in design and implementation of strategies to promote effective communications with external and internal audiences (e.g., on projects/programs, promotional materials, and issues campaigns).
  • Relationships: Assist in maintaining relationships with key external and/or internal constituencies. Helps teams respond to routine inquiries about the WBG to enhance two-way communications and dialogue. 
  • Products: Assist in designing, writing, researching, producing and disseminating communications products (e.g. news releases, brochures, Q&As, presentations, briefing notes, blogs, online content, etc.) about the WBG, its policies and operations. 
  • Events: Carry out specifics of scheduling and logistics for communications activities and events (e.g. executive missions and speeches, press conferences, seminars, town hall meetings, etc.) involving external and/or internal audiences. 
  • Data Management: Provide instant support on the data and metadata management on the WBG Energy & Extractives Open Data and Analytics platform – ENERGYDATA.INFO
  • Assist with the creation of graphics and other visual elements for social media promotion. 
  • Assist with monitoring and analyzing digital metrics and producing metrics reports. 
  • Provide overall support to the team on routine tasks and programs. 

Selection Criteria 
Successful applicants will have a strong GIS and web-based data analytics development experience with an 
  • educational background in Economics, Energy, Public Policy and/or Geography. Currently enrolled in a Master’s or Bachelor’s program in engineering, economics, public policy, computer science, international development, international affairs or other related fields; 
  • Currently enrolled in an academic program that mandates or is willing to provide academic credit for this internship; 
  • Knowledge of scripting Python, and R, and in using GIS tools like Q GIS or ArcGISbe will be considered an advantage; 
  • Experience in data visualization development and basic mapping principle will be considered an advantage, 
  • Experience in web user interface development and design is a significant advantage; 
  • Demonstrated experience in partnership outreach, event planning and communications; 
  • Excellent spoken and written English skills, knowledge of additional languages(s) is a plus; 
  • Experience with energy, data and mapping. 

Location and Timeframe 
The location is in Washington DC, USA. The intern is expected to join the team in March 2019 and provide the service until May/June 2019.

All information gathered, and reports produced under this assignment will remain the property of the World Bank which retains the right to use them in whatever way or form it deems appropriate. As a consultant working on this task, the Intern does not have the right to use data/information/reports gathered or produced in undertaking the work detailed in this TOR for publication or presentational purposes without the prior approval of the World Bank Task Leader for this particular task.
